ANTELOPE VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL’S JOURNEY TO A SAFE CAMPUS

Keynote, Doug Luffborough, Turning the Hearts Center

Lancaster, CA. March 24, 2004. - On March 24, 2004, Antelope Valley High School will be hosting an AV Youth Summit. The Summit is a one day conference for Antelope Valley High School students to identify, brainstorm, and develop innovative ways to teach, enforce, advocate and model leadership, tolerance and character behavior on the school campus, and to eradicate racism, violence, substance abuse, and other societal ills. Attendees at the Summit will encompass two hundred plus students, school administration, and community based leaders. The day will kickoff with a keynote, Doug Luffborough, Turning the Hearts Center, and follow through with four sessions of eight workshops covering the topics of: Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Juvenile Justice System, Conflict Resolution, Human Relations, Leadership Development, Tolerance, Anger Management, and Character Development.

The Summit is a coordinated collaborative of the Antelope Valley Human Relations Task Force, Antelope Valley Mentoring Partnership, Antelope Valley Union High School District, and Los Angeles Commission on Human Relations.  “The partnerships provide a key factor in the success of defining, implementing, and operating effective and efficient educational campuses and opening the opportunity to grow our resources and knowledge base both on and off the school campus,” Lori Goodell, Antelope Valley Human Relations Task Force – Education Committee Chairperson. Participating organizations include: Antelope Valley Mentoring Partnership, Antelope Valley Union High School District, ACS, Turning the Hearts Center, Seeking Peace Inc., and Murrell’s Community Service Agency.

The expected benefits and outcome of the AV Youth Summit will be further reviewed by the students, the school and district, and the community based organizations to ensure that a safe and conducive environment for learning exists on every school campus. “The school reflects the community at large. Therefore we must build together with a community commitment to safe schools. Relationships, resources and respect are the key pillars upon which communities and schools grow and become stronger. Through the three R’s the AV Youth Summit will begin the journey to a safer Antelope Valley High School and a safer Antelope Valley community,” Karen Patterson, Principal, Antelope Valley High School.
