Superintendent’s Message: School Safety

The Antelope Valley Union High School District strives to provide a safe and secure setting at all of our school sites. Events like the Safety Symposium at Antelope Valley High School offer the community a forum to review, discuss and learn about the various aspects the district’s safety program. Effective communication between students, teachers, and parents is critical to our success.

The high school district has some of the most effective and innovative means of ensuring campus safety….some of those are

• A District Support and Response Team
• Effective collaboration between law enforcement officials and school personnel.
• An articulation plan of action between feeder school districts and ourselves that includes transition interventions that address the needs of incoming 9th graders.
• Curriculum emphasizing anti-drugs and violence… (required for all 9th grade students with a follow-up lesson at the 11th grade).
• Safe Schools Coordinators at each site whose responsibility is to collect and study data relative to discipline.
• Staff In-Services on a wide variety of safety and security issues
• Emergency drills such as the “Active Shooter Response Training Scenarios” which are coordinated with our local law enforcement agencies.
• Implementation of effective interventions that include: an Anger Management referral program at each, trained personnel at each site in Conflict Resolution techniques, peer mediation programs and Drug/Alcohol Diversion programs
• We also established effective Anti-Gang activities that include placing a trained designated gang investigator at each site and conducting ongoing site presentations on gang awareness.

Your comments, suggestions and continued participation at your children’s schools indicates that you are truly dedicated, as are we, to a safe school environment. Thank you for your time, your interest, AND your dedication!

Dr. David J. Vierra,
Superintendent
