AVUHSD Home Study Program

Home Study is the district's program for families where the parents want to home school their children but want a connection to an accredited high school. It is open to any family residing in the area of the Antelope Valley Union High School District who meets certain criteria.

These are some of the advantages for a parent and student who are interested in Home Study:

  • Parents can monitor their student’s education daily.
  • Students can attend Home Study and AVC, earning both high school and college credit.
  • Students can accelerate at a faster rate in Home Study and graduate early.
  • Students can attend Home Study and still have all of the rights of their home school.
  • Students can still play sports and participate at their home school events.
  • Students can graduate from and walk with their peers at their home site.
  • Students who are behind in school can make up their lost credits and get back on track for graduation.
  • Students can take up to two concurrent classes at their home school while attending Home Study.

The parent is the teacher and works with the district's Home Study teacher to provide an appropriate course of study for the student, following the district-approved curriculum. The student and parent set up a plan for completing the required work at home. The student and parent both come to the Home Study classroom for testing, at least once per week. The parent is responsible for monitoring the student while testing, grading tests taken, and going over the results with the student.

Criteria for enrollment in the Home Study Program:

  • Read at grade level
  • Clean discipline record
  • Self-motivated
  • Good relationship between parent and student
  • Parent committed to the student's education
  • Parent available to attend weekly scheduled testing.
