February 6, 2013 Board Meeting:
Reports and Presentations:
CFO Mrs. Brenda Yardeen gave a brief update regarding the Governor’s preliminary budget proposal for the 2013-14 school year. The proposed budget appears to be more education friendly, however it is very early in the process and we will have to wait and see how it develops over the coming months.
Director of School Improvement Mr. Brett Neal provided the Board with information regarding a proposed reconfiguration of the International Baccalaureate programs at Highland and Quartz Hill High Schools. [Please see IB Presentation in pdf attachment below]. Key components of the reconfiguration include:
- All current HHS students would continue in the IB program at HHS in its current form.
- All incoming 9th grade students, when they reach their 11th grade year, could put in an intent to transfer to Quartz Hill High School to participate in the IB program with the intent of obtaining the IB Diploma.
- In order to qualify to move to QH, these students would need to meet all of the criteria identified as essential for inclusion in the IB program.
CSEA President Mr. Scott Fish spoke to the Board regarding employees who needed to have some vacation days returned to them as the result of an MOU. He also addressed the desire to have substitutes made available in long standing vacancies.
AVTA President Mr. Dan Shy spoke to the Board regarding a recent settlement agreement and
thanked the District for the successful agreement. He also asked for information to be made available regarding summer school as soon as possible.
From the Board/Superintendent:
Board Member Mrs. Donita Winn mentioned two great programs she had recently attended, specifically the All-District Art show at MOAH in Lancaster, and the Honors Band concert at EHS.
Also, Ms. Winn apologized for not being around the District more as she is spending a great deal of time in Bishop helping her daughter who is having some health issues.
Board Clerk Ms. Kathy Carothers also wanted to congratulate students for their great art work displayed at the MOAH and thanked the teachers for their efforts on behalf of the students.
Board Member Mr. Jim Lott recently attended two basketball games at HHS and commented on the great sportsmanship displayed by everyone in the gym.
