Free Meals Info & Online Application


To Parents/Guardians of incoming freshman and other students new to AVUHSD:
Your child’s meal status does NOT automatically carry over to the High School District.
You must complete a new application. You may apply online using the link below.

We use the highest level of data encryption available, meaning that your information is always safe and guarded.  Your data is transmitted to the Antelope Valley Union High School District Food Service Office the same day you apply, allowing for quicker processing so you can receive benefits faster.  If you don’t have a computer at home, each high school (Antelope Valley HS, Eastside HS, Palmdale HS, Quartz Hill HS, Lancaster HS, Highland HS, Littlerock HS, Wm. J. Pete Knight HS) has a computer dedicated for your use.

The beginning of the school year is a busy time and processing of applications could take up to 10 days.  Parents and guardians are responsible for the student’s meals until the applications are processed. You will be notified by mail.  All students use their school ID card at the register. This includes students approved for Free & Reduced-Price meals and students who pay cash or have money on their prepaid account.

LETTER TO HOUSEHOLDS ABOUT the
NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM and SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAM for 2013-2014

 

 

The Antelope Valley Union High School District takes part in the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Programs. Meals are served every school day. Students may buy lunch for $2.50. Students at participating schools may buy breakfast for $1.50. You may also pay for school meals ONLINE at www.mylunchmoney.com .  Enrolling and funding is simple and completed online.  Create the account by using the student’s school ID number.  You can check balances and fund your child’s account from your computer, phone, or fax.

 

Eligible students may receive meals free of charge. We do not charge for Reduced Price meals. APPLY AT http://avuhsd.schoollunchapp.com

We will let you know when your application is approved or denied.  Your benefits will be good for the entire school year unless otherwise indicated.  YOUR APPROVAL LETTER MAY BE USED FOR OTHER SCHOOL BENEFITS, such as waiving the fee for the yellow school bus, and for certain school tests. PLEASE KEEP THE LETTER.  

REGARDING INCOMING FRESHMEN AND STUDENTS NEW TO OUR DISTRICT: The student’s meal status does not automatically carry over to the High School District (except for HELUSD students). There is no grace period.  A new application for free or reduced price meals must be approved in the Food Services office before students can receive meals at no charge.

APPLYING FOR BENEFITS:  You may apply for benefits at any time during the school year. If you are not eligible now but your income goes down, you lose your job, your family size becomes larger, or you become eligible for Food Stamps/CalFresh, CalWORKs, KinGAP, or FDPIR benefits, you may submit an application at that time. 

VERIFICATION: School officials may check the information on the application at any time during the school year. You may be asked to send information to prove that your child(ren) is/are eligible to receive free or reduced price meals.

FS/CalFresh, CalWORKS, KINGAP, and FDPIR BENEFITS: This district participates in Direct Certification.If you receive notification that your child has been directly certified to receive free meals for the school year, you DO NOT need to complete an application.  If School officials do not contact you before July 27 to notify you that your child is approved for free meals for the new school year, please contact the Food Service Office.  You may need to complete an application and list the students and the qualifying case number. If the case number is submitted, you will not need to list any income or the social security number of the adult who signs the application. 

FOSTER CARE CHILDREN or CHILDREN PLACED IN OUT-OF-HOME CARE—YOU DO NOT NEED TO COMPLETE A SEPARATE APPLICATION FOR EACH FOSTER CHILD.

IF ALL OF THE CHILDREN THAT YOU LIST AS ATTENDING THE AVUHSD ARE FOSTER CHILDREN (the legal responsibility of the welfare agency or a ward of the court), you do not need to list any other members of the household nor any income, and you do not need to list the last 4 digits of the social security number of the adult who signs. The foster parent or agency official must sign the application.

IF SOME OF THE CHILDREN ARE FOSTER CHILDREN AND SOME ARE NOT, you will need to list all children, adults, and income so that those children in our district who are not in foster care may be checked for approval.  If a qualifying case number for the non-foster child(ren) is submitted, you may not need to list the other household members, income, and social security number.

ALL OTHER HOUSEHOLDS, INCLUDING WIC HOUSEHOLDS:  If the children are not in foster care, and if you do not enter a FS/CalFresh, CalWORKs, KinGAP, or FDPIR case number for anyfamily member, complete all parts of the application.

NOTE: REPORTING INCOME If your income is not always the same, list the amount that you normally get.  For example, if you normally get $1000 each month, but you missed some work last month and only got $900, enter that you receive $1000 per month.  If you normally get overtime, include it, but not if you get it only sometimes.  For each household member, list each type of income received, how often it is received, and indicate the source as directed. For earnings, be sure to list the gross income, not the take-home pay. Gross income is the amount earned before taxes and other deductions.  You should be able to find it on your pay stub or your boss can tell you.  For other income, list the amount each person got for the month from welfare, child support, alimony, pensions, retirement, Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Veteran’s benefits (VA benefits), and disability benefits.  Other incomes include Worker’s compensation, unemployment or strike benefits, regular contributions from people who do not live in your household, etc. Do not include income from SNAP, FDPIR, WIC, Federal education benefits and foster payments received by the family from the placing agency.  For ONLY the self-employed, under Earnings from Work, report income after expenses.  This is for your business, farm, or rental property.  If your housing is part of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative, or you get combat pay, do not include these allowances as income. All other allowances must be included in your gross income.  For any person (including children) with no income, you must indicate No Income.

MEDICAL OR SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS: If you believe your child needs a food substitute or texture modification because of a disability, please contact the school.  A child with a disability is entitled to a special meal at no extra charge if the disability prevents the child from eating the regular school meal.

FAIR HEARING — If you do not agree with the decision regarding your application or the result of verification, you may discuss it with AVUHSD Food Services.  You also have the right to a fair hearing.  A fair hearing may be requested by calling or writing the following school official:

PRIVACY ACT STATMENT: This explains how we will use the information you give us. The Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act requires the information on this application. You do not have to give the information, but if you do not, we cannot approve your child for free or reduced price meals. You must include the last four digits of the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application.  The last four digits of the social security number is not required when you apply on behalf of a foster child or you list a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) case number or other FDPIR identifier for your child or when you indicate that the adult household member signing the application does not have a social security number. We will use your information to determine if your child is eligible for free or reduced price meals, and for administration and enforcement of the lunch and breakfast programs.  We MAY share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules.
