Susan G. Komen Walk to End Breast Cancer 2012 San Diego

Please contact Beth Kieffer bkieffer@avhsd.org at Littlerock High School for further information, or you can donate to her team online at http://www.the3day.org/site/TR
Thank you for taking the first step in making a donation to the November 16-18, 2012 San Diego 3-Day on behalf of Elizabeth Kieffer. If you are unable to donate online, please print out a donation form.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day™ net proceeds fund innovative global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment. Virtually every major advance in the fight against breast cancer in the last 29 years has been impacted by a Susan G. Komen™ grant.

A message from Beth:   "My name is Elizabeth Kieffer, known by Beth to many, and this year I'm participating in the Susan G. Koman walk for the Cure in San Diego in November.  We are asked to raise $2300 and I'm almost half way to my goal.  We are to walk as much of the 20 miles each day as we can.  I'll do my best, but don't know if I can make the full distance.  Cancer is something that has affected all our lives and I'm doing this to support many and hopefully to help to fund finding a cure.  If you can support me go to:

 http://www.the3day.org

Then go to Donate Particpant: Elizabeth Kieffer and San Diego walk as there are 2 Elizabeth Kieffer's in different cities.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  If you'd like to send to me I will add to the total and make sure you get a "thank you" from the site so you know it has been added."

Thanks again,
Elizabeth "Beth" Kieffer

Helpful Information for Employee Activities and Stuff:
Cystic Fibrosis Charity Motorcycle Run ON MAY 25, 2013

"I have a Health Careers Student who is doing an amazing Senior Project. Her little brother suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. She wants to do a Charity Motorcycle Run to raise money to help find a cure for this horrible disease and needs our help. On May 25, 2013, the first annual “68 Roses- Cystic Fibrosis Charity Run” will be held, sponsored by Antelope Valley Harley Davidson, The Rock Inn, and many more.

We need anyone who rides a motorcycle to come and participate in this event. It is a well-known fact that many District employees own and ride motorcycles. It would be a wonderful gesture for the District to have a team that helps raise money for this cause.   Please help spread the word, and get your bikes ready to ride in this event!"

The Automotive Technology Program at Desert Winds High School includes a race team  that is sponsored by the Instructor of the Automotive Technology classes on campus, private sponsors, and by maintaining a student project  1969 Chevrolet Nova bracket race car that competes at local raceways, including the annual NHRA Career Day held in Pomona, California.

The team encompasses a complete student staff that includes a fund raising committee, graphic arts committee along with the event planning. Both male and female students participate within the team and serve as crew for the car.   Students of the DWHS Race Team continually promote the National Hot Rod Association, and only attend sanctioned NHRA events. Our message is to inform the students of the industry, and the benefits of organized racing rather than risk their lives for illegal street racing.

The Los Angeles County Sherriff Motorsports not only supports the DWHS efforts, but has allowed Deputy Scott Graham to serve as  the official advisor for the team.  Please show your support for these hard working students!  THANK YOU!

The Alumni Association hasdecided to offer all past and present AVUHSD employees and their guests a discounted price of $60 per ticket for the Centennial Reunion at the Poppy Pavilion on Saturday, October 13, 2012. This price will not change so it will be good up to the day of the event (if room is available). They are asking that all reservations be paid by August 30th to help with their costs.

Gene Wickham, the Alumni Association President, also updates the webpage and has added a "Faculty and Staff" Paypal button to the Paypal payment page in the event that anyone would like to pay for their reservation online.

Also, the Alumni Association is requesting that AVHS Alum complete the on line "Alumni Information Sheet" at www.avhs2012.com (click on "Make Reservations”). This will also help the reunion committee organize the seating at the reunion as well as clarify if attendees would like to sit with their class or at the staff/faculty tables.

PAST EVENT: Walk to Defeat ALS

Information courtesy of Lisa Potter, Secretary, Palmdale High School

Walk To Defeat ALS.jpgRecently former PHS student Juan Lastra contacted me regarding his mother and her fight with ALS. I was shocked and saddened to hear about Juan’s mom. I am very familiar with this awful disease - our family friend, Bill Hobson, lost his fight with ALS a few years back and it’s hard to watch outgoing strong people lose their life due to the affects of ALS. Juan is participating in the “Walk to Defeat ALS” on October 21st [2012] and I asked him to send me the link to make a donation and I also told him I would share the link here at work.  Please click on the link below to read Juan’s story about his mom and why he is participating in this fundraiser.  I am not asking you to make a donation , but I know Juan would be very appreciative if you did – I just mainly wanted to spread the word about his mom and his efforts to raise money for awareness and a cure on this ugly disease.

Here is the link to his story –

PAST INFO: Need a forever home!

Posted October 2, 2012

TWO DOGS NEED A HOME. PLEASE SEE INFO ABOUT EACH BELOW!

Miracle the Dog!  "Antelope Valley Dog and Cat Rescue (in Pearblossom) rescued this poor little guy being attacked by a coyote....(hence the name Miracle).  He had broken ribs and punctured lungs.  The picture shows him after his surgery.  He is neutered and all current vaccinations are complete.  He is 1 or 2 years old, and needs a loving home.  They said he is very sweet.  AV Dog and Cat Rescue does a "home check" prior to adoption and the fee is $100 (which doesn't even come close to covering the costs involved in saving his life and they don't like to charge, but they are a non-profit organization that only functions on donations).

Vilma Drever, Founder of AV Dog and Cat Rescue can be reached at 661-406-2179.  This is her cell number, and most of the time, her voice mail answers (it is her cute grandkids voice), so just leave a message with your phone number and she will call you back.  Vilma is a very nice person, very caring."

TAKE A LOOK AT LOKI!  "This is Loki. He is a 4 year old Chihuahua/Jack Russell Mix that needs a new forever home as our current living arrangements are about to change. He is a bit skittish as most chihuahua's are, but really sweet when he warms up to you. He does well with other dogs, but would probably be best as an only dog especially if you desire an affectionate lap dog. If you or anyone else you know are interested please contact me via email or personal cell phone (661-886-4908) Text or call is fine. Thank you for considering this guy."  -  -Jason McClure  <jmcclure@cityoflancasterca.org

As we move into rattlesnake season in the Antelope Valley and the western states, the risk of snake bites grows. Fortunately, while a snake may be hard for you to notice, your pets can detect them from hundreds of feet away. With over 1,300 rattlesnake bites to people in the U.S. in 2007, and the number of bites increasing each year, training your pet to detect and avoid a rattlesnake is especially important.   Questions:   hidoc@hotmail.com   Telephone:  661-266-7097

Little Chi Needs a Home BEFORE 4/26/13!

Do you have a forever home for Little Chi - SHE NEEDS A HOME BEFORE 4/26/13!

I forgot to mention she is about 2 years old and this is a terrible picture.  You can tell how scared she is.  The only thing I can add is when I saw her, she was in shock and had a bad gash over her right hind leg.  In lieu of the circumstances her disposition was really good and very friendly -- SUPER SWEET!    Her intake was 4/22 and from what I understand she has until 4/26.  I have been working with the Lancaster Shelter to network her.   I am hoping to save this little girl, as I want to point out to people that when they donate to animal control, this is where their money is going.  This little girl went to the vet and got treated and the response time to Lake Los Angeles to pick her up was done in an exemplary time frame.

Thanks again,  The little baby is at Lancaster Animal Control, Intake # A4566862.Lil Chi.jpg

For our Friends and Family in Oklahoma!

red cross logo 1.jpgThanks for all your help season with donations for those back east who suffered through Hurricane Sandy.  Now we send our thoughts and well-wishes to family and friends in Oklahoma and surrounding areas who went through the recent devastating tornado and storms.  If you are able to donate a few dollars, it would really help those who need a place to stay, food to eat, and clothing to wear as many lost everything from the tornado!
