OPEN ENROLLMENT OR SCHOOL CHOICE (school to school within the AVUHSD):

There are two options for a student to request to attend a high school within the Antelope Valley Union High School District other than the student’s school of residence:  Open Enrollment or School Choice.  Since you may choose only one of these options, please read the application packet thoroughly to ensure that you are choosing the most appropriate option for your student.

Open Enrollment and School Choice for the current 2009-10 school year are now closed.  During January 2010, information packets for 2010-11 Open Enrollment/School Choice will be mailed to the homes of current eighth grade public school students, to the homes of returning high school students currently attending Program Improvement Schools, and to the principals of charter and private junior high schools.  Information packets may also be obtained from any high school or from the AVUHSD Student Services office or the AVUHSD documents website at www.avdocs.org (Click the link to “Student Services”.)

Although the majority of AVUHSD schools are overcrowded, a limited number of 2010-11 Open Enrollment spaces will be available at Antelope Valley High School, Highland High School, Littlerock High School, and Palmdale High School.  These would be general Open Enrollment spaces not specific to particular programs.  Approvals would be on a lottery basis.  Of course, in addition to these spaces, all qualified sibling Open Enrollment applications to all schools would be approved.  There are no 2010-11 Open Enrollment spaces available at Lancaster High School or Quartz Hill High School with the exception of Sibling Open Enrollment.

Also, please be advised that the School Choice option is available only to students who live within the boundaries of high schools that have been identified as Program Improvement Schools:  Antelope Valley High School, Highland High School, Lancaster High School, Littlerock High School, or Palmdale High School.  In compliance with federal mandates through the “No Child Left Behind Act”, priority for School Choice will be given to students based on disadvantaged socio-economic status and lower academic standing.

Applications for Open Enrollment or School Choice for the new 2010-11 school year must be received by the deadline of Friday, January 29, 2010 in the AVUHSD Student Services office, 548 W. Lancaster Blvd., Suite 102, Lancaster, CA  93534.  Applications may be submitted by mail, in person, or by fax to (661) 949-6292.  Result letters will be mailed during March 2010.  For further information, feel free to contact the Student Services office at (661) 729-2321.

INTERDISTRICT ATTENDANCE WAIVERS (district to district):

Interdistrict attendance waivers are for students to request to attend a high school within another school district.

Interdistrict Attendance Waivers from the Antelope Valley Union High School District to another school district may be obtained in the Student Services division at the Antelope Valley Union High School District Office. Upon review and approval by the Assistant Superintendent, the form may be mailed or hand-delivered by the parent/guardian to the school district requested.  Approval by the AVUHSD does not necessarily indicate automatic approval by the school district requested.

Interdistrict Attendance Waivers from another high school district to AVUHSD should be obtained from the high school district of residence.  Upon approval by the high school district of residence, the form may be mailed or hand-delivered by the parent/guardian to the AVUHSD Student Services office (548 W. Lancaster Blvd., Suite #102, Lancaster) no later than January 29, 2010 for the 2010-11 school year.  The form may also be faxed to (661) 949-6292.  Exceptions to the deadline may be made if the student is requesting a renewal and is already attending the school requested.

Because of increased housing development within the Antelope Valley and the resulting population explosion, the majority of AVUHSD schools are overcrowded.  Therefore, 2010-11 Interdistrict Attendance Waivers to all AVUHSD schools, programs, and academies will be closed with the exception of returning/renewal students and students who have siblings currently attending the requested school (and who will continue to attend the requested school for 2010-11).

For further information, feel free to contact the Student Services office at (661) 729-2321, Extension 102.
