A Message From Mr. Carver,
Thursday marks the start of the 20th Annual AVUHSD / AV Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament. The simultaneous trials, with actual judicial officers presiding, will run from 6 to approximately 8:45pm on February 14th, February 21st, February 28th, and March 7th at the Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse on 4th Street West and Avenue M in Lancaster. You are cordially invited to attend and support your students!
With over 150 students participating, ten teams from local high schools will conduct a trial created by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (http://www.crf-usa.org). This year’s case, People v. Buschell, concerns a college student found dead at a festival’s campground. The deceased student was planning to report a rival’s apparent violation of a college’s honor code. When the police make the arrest, for 2nd degree murder, that rival and now suspect is carrying a concealed weapon without a license. The fascinating and timely pretrial issue: Is the state’s concealed carry statute constitutional?
We salute you for your hard work and take a moment also to commend and wish well the following mock trial teachers and their teams:
Antelope Valley: Nicole Thompson
Desert: Shay Wallace
Eastside: Mark Cook
Highland: Sandra Gordon
Knight: Kristine Parsons and Aileen Simon
Lancaster: John Butler
Paraclete: Rick McGuire
Quartz Hill: Gail DeGroff
SOAR (Two Teams!) : Stephanie Norton
Schools with mock trial programs but without a team in the tournament draw:
Desert Winds: Joe Esparza
Rosamond: Rhonda Deal
Regards,
Derek
